Kiowa County Recycling Program

Kiowa County's recycling program is off to a terrific start! We have purchased two balers for cardboard, plastic, and aluminum. The recycling center is located at the old County Road and Bridge shop in Sheridan Lake. Right now we are able to collect and bale cardboard, plastics (#1, #2, and #5), aluminum and baling twine. We have also purchased and removed the seats from two old school buses to haul recyclables. Cardboard is picked up from several business locations in Eads on Tuesdays. There are some dumpsters marked cardboard only for private citizens along the street by the Eads City Shop.

We have also purchased 6 dumpsters - Orange with Black lids - that will be located at -- Towner, Sheridan Lake, Brandon, Chivington, Haswell and Arlington. These dumpsters are "FOR CARDBOARD ONLY". Cardboard in these dumpsters is picked up on Tuesdays.

Our objective is to keep as much cardboard, plastic and aluminum out of the county landfill as reasonable and extend the life of the landfill by several years. We sell the baled cardboard, plastic and aluminum, but this is not a profit making venture. Most value will come from extending life of our landfill.

CARDBOARD

We are recycling corrugated and flat cardboard -- we cannot recycle wet, dirty, oil soaked, food stained, painted or waxed cardboard. Boxes larger than 12 inches in length, width or depth need to be flattened or broken down. Please remove all non-cardboard packing materials from boxes.

PLASTIC

WE CAN ONLY RECYCLE #1, #2 AND #5 PLASTICS! LOOK FOR A TRIANGLE SHAPED EMBLEM USUALLY ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER WITH A #1, #2 OR #5 IN THE CENTER.

PETE or PET is #1 plastic: pop bottles, water bottles, food packaging (no clamshell food containers), salad dressing, peanut butter and other snack containers, cooking oil, mouthwash, shampoo, liquid soap, window cleaners...

HDPE is #2 plastic: milk jugs, juice containers, some water bottles, 5 gallon buckets, household chemical containers, detergents, motor oil containers, cosmetic containers, shampoo and conditioners, container caps and bottle lids, smaller crates, Clorox disinfecting wipe containers, ice cream buckets, cat litter jugs...

PP is #5 plastic: some bottles, small tubs, rope, baler twine, feed tubs, cottage cheese containers..

All containers need to be EMPTY OF ALL CONTENTS AND CLEANED/RINSED OUT, OIL CONTAINERS DRAINED, AND CAPS REMOVED. PUMPS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE!

Tops and Lids should be left off. Put them in another container - we can recycle them!

It helps a lot if the containers are in a TRASH BAG rather than loose.

PLASTIC WRAP and PLASTIC BAGS are not recyclable at this time!

ALUMINUM

All aluminum cans and other aluminum material (wire, trim, etc.) is accepted.
